In 2648 he was on the Argos, captained by the attractive
Margo Tellefsen, bound for sparsely settled Gummidgy. Among the passengers was JinxianEmil Horne, who befriended Bey, and famed Kdatlyno artist Lloobee. During a sightseeing stop to watch a starseed set sail, everyone fell unconscious. Bey awoke to find they had been gassed, the ship's hyperwave communicator destroyed, and Lloobee kidnapped. Margo reported seeing another ship just before the attack.
The Argo continued to Gummidgy, where the kidnappers sent a ransom demand. Emil was determined to rescue Lloobee. Bey thought it safer to let the authorities to negotiate with the kidnappers, but helped him narrow down the suspects. From a list of ships present at Gummidgy, they thought Margo's
description of the kidnappers' ship best matched the Drunkard's Walk, a private yacht owned by Larchmont Bellamy. Bey knew Bellamy, who was quite old, jaded, and hated aliens, so might have kidnapped Lloobee for a thrill. Emil charged off in a rented car, flying to Bellamy's hunting camp. Bey tagged along only to stop Emil, but the Jinxian ignored his objections. Bey and Emil talked to Bellamy, but found nothing suspicious and left.
Then nearby, Emil spotted evidence of a Slaver disintegrator being used to dig a cave. The two landed in the forest and found a cave entrance, guarded by one of Bellamy's group. Heedless of the danger, Emil charged in and used a sonic stunner on the guard. Bey, hanging back, saw his friend fall and taken captive. Bey would have left to alert the authorities, but thought Emil would be killed. While waiting to ambush the gang members with another stunner, Bey was himself stunned and dragged inside the cave. He awoke to hear Bellamy and the others planning to kill him. Lloobee suddenly charged, distracting the gang, and Bey ran for the car. Bellamy reached it slightly ahead of him, but Bey fought him off, jumped into the car and flew away.
The car had no radio, so he was unable to call for help. Soon Bellamy gave
chase in the Drunkard's Walk and tried to force Bey to land. Bey
rammed the car against the ship's hull, then the wrecked car crashed to earth.
He was saved by the car's crash field, but injured. Bellamy landed and
helped him out of the wreckage. Suddenly they noticed the damaged ship was
standing on just two of its three landing legs— only the ship's gyros were
keeping it upright! Bellamy ran to rescue his ship, but as he reached the
airlock the overloaded gyros jammed and the ship began cartwheeling. Bellamy
was thrown to his death. Bey summoned help with the wrecked ship's
Later, back at the spaceport, Bey talked to Margo. She reported Lloobee and Emil had been released in exchange for immunity from prosecution and anonymity for the kidnappers. Bey said he knew she was an accomplice in the kidnapping, but hadn't told the authorities. Margo explained she was the mother of Bellamy, who had tired of life and sought his own death with ever riskier behavior. Margo found Bey interesting and proposed they spend time together until Bey could return to Sharrol.
Two years later, Bey was alone on Jinx and saw a display of Lloobee's sculptures. Lloobee had depicted Bey and Emil as noble heroes. But his demonic depiction of the kidnappers made their identities recognizable— they had neglected to include Lloobee in their contract for anonymity.
